Plastic Recycling Near Me

Plastic bottles and jugs (the kind that held water, soda, milk, detergent or juice) are the plastics most widely accepted for recycling. Rules vary by community, and the number inside the triangle doesn't guarantee a container is recyclable locally, so check your program's list. Plastic bags and film usually need a separate store drop-off.

How to prepare plastic for recycling

  1. Empty the container and give it a quick rinse.
  2. Put the cap back on if your program accepts caps (many do), and don't crush bottles unless told to.
  3. Leave out plastic bags, wrap and film — they jam sorting equipment.
  4. Check whether your program accepts tubs, trays and clamshells in addition to bottles and jugs.

What usually isn't accepted

  • Plastic bags and film (use store drop-off bins)
  • Foam (polystyrene) containers
  • Plastic utensils and very small items
  • Garden hoses, toys and other non-container plastic

Will I get paid, or is there a fee?

Free to recycle for households. Outside deposit states there is no cash value; in bottle-bill states eligible plastic bottles earn the container deposit.

Common questions about plastic recycling

Does the recycling number matter?

Only partly. Numbers 1 (PET) and 2 (HDPE) bottles and jugs are the most commonly accepted. Whether other numbers are accepted depends on your local program.

Should I leave the cap on?

In many programs, yes — caps are now recycled along with the bottle. Check your local rules.
